Book Preview: The List by Patricia Forde #WordsMatter

It was a month ago that I received an Advance Reader’s Copy of this book, as I had a lot on my TBR list, it took me some time to get around reading it. The book (The List by Patricia Forde) releases this August, here is an exclusive sneak peek!

The city of Ark is the last safe place on Earth. To make sure humans are able to survive, everyone in Ark must speak List, a language of only 500 words. Everyone that is, except Letta.

As apprentice to the Wordsmith, Letta can read all the words that have ever existed. Forbidden words like freedom, music, and even pineapple tell her about a world she’s never known.

One day her master disappears and the leaders of Ark tell Letta she is the new Wordsmith and must shorten List to fewer and fewer words. Then Letta meets a teenage boy who somehow knows all the words that have been banned. Letta’s faced with a dangerous choice: sit idly by and watch language slowly slip away or follow a stranger on a path to freedom . . . or banishment.

The best thing I liked about the book was the plot and the concept. The idea of a world where language was restricted to 500 words just terrified me to an unimaginable level (read: scared the sh#t out of me!) and really made think, what if this really happens? The book was really gripping at the beginning, it became a little slow paced and boring around the middle. There is nothing to be sad about because there is a bang at the end which will leave you thinking. I would not be able to reveal more, as I would be giving out spoilers then.

The language was flawless and so was the way Patricia switched between the legal tongue and the English we generally speak in. This book will definitely remind you of how we take language for granted and how at the end of the day, words are all that we have.
