I picked up the book out of mere curiosity, just liked the title. When I saw the byline say Cecelia Ahern, I knew I had signed up for something good. The protagonist of the story, Celestine North lives a perfect life. She’s a model’s daughter and sister, she’s well-liked by her classmates and teachers, and she’s dating the impossibly charming Art Crevan.
But then Celestine encounters a situation in which she makes an instinctive decision. She breaks a rule and now faces life-changing repercussions. She could be imprisoned. She could be branded. She could be found FLAWED.
In her breathtaking young adult debut, bestselling author Cecelia Ahern depicts a society in which obedience is paramount and rebellion is punished. And where one young woman decides to take a stand that could cost her everything.
In fact, it’s hard to review Cecelia Ahern’s new novel – her first aimed at young adults – without giving too much away, because the story constantly twists in unexpected ways. The story is set in the future, yet it takes us to the past, of closed mindsets, orthodox people and judgmental attitude. The story is told brilliantly despite a flat prose and stiff dialogues. The action needed is there all throughout the story setting the story in an ever changing motion.
The efficient play with emotions remind us of what kind of a society we are heading towards and tells us to be accepting in a very subtle way.
Ahern is, of course, best known for romantic novels that have made her a bestseller all over the world. This isn’t her first published work of speculative fiction (she contributed to a 2015 collection of Doctor Who short stories). and she clearly understands what makes an effective dystopian setting. There are only a few scenes of violence in Flawed, but they are extraordinarily vivid and effective without being gratuitous.
The book ends on a cliffhanger, and while there are signs that Celestine’s adventures might take a familiar turn, I hope Ahern keeps things as sharp and fresh as she has done in this gripping novel in the next installment. Stay tuned for the “PERFECT” review after this!
