A viral disease has been affecting this world recently. No, it’s not Ebola, it’s SELFIES!
I would go a little with category two…excluding the “Shut up oldies!” part!
|A SELFIE OF ME BY MYSELF!|
Jokes apart…as history states:-
The term “selfie” was discussed by photographer Jim Krause in 2005, although photos anticipating some of the formal aspects of the selfie can be seen in the self-taken photographs that were particularly common on MySpace. Writer Kate Losse proposes that between 2006 and 2009 (when Facebook became more popular than MySpace), the “MySpace pic” (typically “an amateurish, flash-blinded self-portrait, often taken in front of a bathroom mirror”) became an indication of bad taste for users of the newer Facebook social network. Early Facebook portraits, Losse claims in contrast, were usually well-focused and more formal, taken by others from distance. In 2009 in the image hosting and video hosting website Flickr, Flickr users used ‘selfies’ to describe seemingly endless self-portraits posted by teenage girls. According to Losse, improvements in design—especially the front-facing camera copied by the iPhone 4 (2010) from Korean and Japanese mobile phones, mobile photo apps such as Instagram, and selfie sites such as ItisMee—led to the resurgence of selfies in the early 2010s.
Selfies are getting viral day by day. Companies are arranging for #SelfieMarathons for celebs and common man and is gaining record breaking popularity. Is it a sign of loneliness, selfishness, or is it just another growing trend?
Some elderly people when interviewed about selfies by me said -“Are those days over when we would hand a camera to an unknown man and ask him to click our picture? and what will happen to the beach photographers?”…I really don’t know.
I clearly remember, an year back or so, our house made came and told me- “Babu, I have created an account on Facebook. I have sent you a friend request, please accept it.” and I was so shocked!
That day is not far away when she would come and say – “…and like my selfie too.”!
